My love for Dobermans started many years ago with the introduction to a relative's Doberman. I knew that I just had to have one! I got my first Doberman just shortly after I got married 11 years ago and have had them ever since. I could never picture myself without one of these loving, intelligent babies.
Callie was born on July 8, 1998. She is my first Dobie girl.
Doberman Pinschers are wonderful dogs! There are so many people who believe that Dobermans are "attack" dogs. This is not so! My experience with Dobies has been nothing but wonderful. The Doberman Pinscher is not the breed for everyone. They can be very high strung at times and must be trained! They are perfect for those of us that are a little on the high strung side ourselves.
These babies are loyal, intelligent, and very loving. Dobermans love attention, the more the better. They just love to be loved.
My Dobies have all been wonderful companions. Callie is especially fun to have around. She makes life interesting!
Right now, we are battling with her shoe fetish. She chews any kind of shoe, whether it be sneaker, sandal, or slipper. She has even gone as far as to rob the sneakers off of our feet! I can't begin to tell you how many times I have almost landed face first into the carpeting.
Callie can respond to the basic commands, sit, come and down. She also has some pet tricks that we just couldn't help ourselves with!
She has been taught, Give me five, Speak, and one of my favorites, Bang! (She lays on her side and pretends she is dead). Although she sometimes lifts up her head to make sure she is getting that "reward" she deserves. I have to tell her "No Cheating!"
One of the funniest characteristics I love is when she does what I call a "Butt Swing". Callie swings her butt around and plops it on the couch as if sitting like a human.
I don't know if this is a Doberman Trait but all of mine have done this. Callie is a character as were all of her predecessors.
Callie seems to have learned the art of "sucking up" already. She knows who to go to when she wants something.
The hardest person to win over is Grandpa. She solved that problem by climbing into his lap and smothering him with kisses!
If you are considering a Doberman, please do some research! Make sure that the Doberman Pinscher is the breed for you.
There are too many times that a Doberman is adopted and the adopted family finds that they cannot keep their new companion for various reasons. Please think long and hard.
Do not buy from a back yard breeder or puppy mill! Find a responsible breeder that cares about this breed. You may even consider saving a Dobie by contacting a rescue group.
The Doberman Pinscher is the type of dog that needs human contact. You cannot leave these dogs alone all the time and expect them to flourish. They will not!
