MOYER Genealogy Forum

MS. MARTHA OWEN MOWRER is a long-time Maurer/Mowrer researcher. In addition to her own ancestors of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Germany, she has collected many other families with these names. Your S.A.S.E. is required for a reply. She is seeking the parents of Baltzer MAURER, Sr. (1713-1765) of Germany. 9631 N. Auburn Point, Dunnellon, Florida 34434-3702.

MICHAEL MOWRER, retired newspaper editor in Washington State, has researched these names for many years in the USA and Europe. He is interested in discussing the Maurer surname, especially as it applies to Germany, Switzerland, Alsace and Pennsylvania in the 1600s, 1700s, and early 1800s. (Maurer, Mauerer)

MOHR Resources

GENE MOHR is publishing a book on the ancestors and descendants of Jacob MOHR and Eva REIFEL who left Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany via Bremen and went to the Port of New Orleans, Louisiana in 1851. Their destination was Cincinnati, Ohio, followed by Peppertown, Franklin County, Indiana. Jacob and Eva (REIFEL) MOHR left Germany with three sons: Philip, John and Conrad Mohr (there might be another child who was born in 1851). One of the REIFEL sons also came with them. Gene descends from Conrad's line and has been in touch with Philip's descendants. "The missing branch is John's line," Gene said. "They were all at a family reunion in 1936 at which time they lived on a farm near Richmond, Indiana." Gene also has a REIFEL genealogy in his possession. Mr. Gene Mohr, 2257 Salem Ave., Grove City, Ohio 43123-1829.

DR. GEORGE MOORE is preparing a book for publication on MOHR/MOORE genealogy and is especially interested in Mohrs of any spelling from Hunterdon County, New Jersey. A SPECIAL UNION
New Mohr/Moore Book - Pre-Publication Announcement
A Special Union, by Dr. George Moore and Shirley Moore Barnes, is an epic work about their Mohr/Moore lineage and early German communities of Hunterdon County, New Jersey. It's an illustrated, two-part, 908 page, hardbound book, containing an every name index.

Book I: "Tracing the MOORE Settlers of Spruce Run, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey, in Germany, Switzerland and Austria," by George Moore, traces the MOR/MOHR family from the Engadin Valley in the Alps during the 14th century to Hapsburg, Austria, to Hesse, Germany where they became part of the Palatine emigration to the U.S. Those researching the names of Mor, Mohr and Maurer will find these historical chronicles of interest.

Book II: "The Ancestors and Descendants of the MOORES of Hunterdon County, New Jersey and Allied Families," by Shirley Moore Barnes, gives the history of the early MORE family of Spruce Run in Hunterdon County, NJ and follows this genealogy to the present day. Book II also presents extensive material on the matrilineal lines who married into, and often intermarried within, the MOORE and related famlies. These female lines have been traced back to not only German ancestors but also to the earliest days of the English immigration to New England and New Jersey, as well as the Dutch immigration to New Amsterdam in the 17th century.

Hans is searching for American descendants of his great-uncle Heinrich Johann MOHR (b 6 Sep 1823 Leutesdorf, Prussia, Germany), who emigrated to America about 1850. MYRON P. WEHR. Editor's Note (May 11, 1998): I was very sorry to learn that Mr. Wehr recently passed away (March 1998). From what I have heard of him, Mr. Wehr was a kind, dedicated genealogist who was very generous with his research and time. A copy of his work titled The Herman Mohr Family is located at the Harry C. Trexler Library, 2400 W. Chew St., Allentown, Pennsylvania 18104, telephone: (610) 821-3500. The typescript follows descendancies of the sons of German immigrant Johann Herman Mohr, who arrived in Philadelphia 20 Oct 1744 on the ship Phoenix. Johann settled in what is now Upper Macungie Twp., Lehigh Co., PA. There might also be a copy at the Lehigh County Historical Society. If anyone can confirm this, please let me know. REINER L. SAUER created a Schevenhuette Database which includes Mohrs from the village of Schevenhuette, Kreis Aachen, (now part of Stolberg Rhld. in the Nordrhein-Westfalen region of Germany.
