BuffNET Setup Instructions for:
WebTV

Although the WebTV system does support a 'typical' ISP connection through a program called "OpenISP", it also has some significant differences from standard computers. Due to the WebTV console's design and operation BuffNET cannot offer any hardware technical support beyond this document.

Technically speaking your WebTV system would be one of two models:

WebTV (Classic)

The first year version

33,600 (33.6kbps) modems

No External Ports

No 'upgrades' available for it's internal system

WebTV Plus

Newer / Current Version

56,000 (56kbps) Kflex modem

Several external ports including Printer Port

Uses an internal hard drive to allow for system updates

Either system will be able to work with BuffNET's systems through the OpenISP plan.

  1. Once you are connected, select <Setup> from the side bar.

  2. From the Setup menu, click <Dialing>.

  3. From the Dialing Options menu, click <Use your ISP>.
Note: If you do not have the USE YOUR ISP option, contact WebTV Customer Care to activate OpenISP.

  4. Read the <Using your own ISP> information then, click the <Continue> button.

  5. Read the <Is using your own ISP right for you?> information then, click the <Continue> button.

  6. Read the Should you use WebTV to connect instead information then, click the <Continue> button.

  7. In the Service provider name text box, type <BuffNET>

  8. In the Login name text box, type your dial-up username.

  9. In the password text box, type your dial-up password.

  10. In the Modem dial-in number text box, type your local BuffNET access number.

Below is BuffNET's Telephone number matrix - last revised March 2002. The local access dialup number will be dependent on your location and your local dialing area.

Please consult your telephone book or your local telephone access provider to see which number is local for you. BuffNET will not be responsible for any long distance charges that may be incurred if you choose a non-local number.

  11. Click the <Done> button.

  12. Click the <Continue> button to allow your WebTV Internet terminal to hang up and reconnect.

  13. Click the <Use your ISP> button. A confirmation screen will provide you with the option to use your own ISP or to use WebTV. Selecting <Use your ISP> will cause the WebTV Internet Terminal to redial using your ISP.

Should you encounter a problem with your WebTV Terminal, please contact WebTV directly. BuffNET can only assist you with account related questions.
