How do I turn off Java and / or
JavaScript in my browser?


Java and JavaScript are usually fairly useful systems for running programs on your local system. Unfortunately some groups have been using Java and JavaScript in fairly malicious ways - the annoying "pop-back" advertisements for the X-10 wireless camera come to mind. This is also the reason some people get into a pop-up window loop where closing one advertisement window opens two more.

It's also reasonable to disable Java and JavaScript until you need it if your system is relatively under powered to operate your web browser in general. For example a Pentium 120Mhz computer running Windows 95 with 16MB of RAM is an 'OK' system - until you try to run Netscape Communicator 4.7x and various plugins.

According to your web browser's Java/JavaScript response:

Find your browser's version in the following list, then follow the directions to turn on/off Java and/or JavaScript.

Netscape Navigator 3.x

Click [OPTIONS] - [NETWORK PREFERENCES] - [LANGUAGES]

Netscape Navigator / Communicator 4.x

Click [EDIT] - [PREFERENCES] - [ADVANCED]

Click [EDIT] - [PREFERENCES] - [ADVANCED]

The option is labeled "SCRIPTING"

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x

Click [VIEW] - [INTERNET OPTIONS] - [SECURITY] - [CUSTOM] - [SETTINGS] - [SCRIPTING]
The option here is to "ENABLE" scripting.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x

Macintosh Version
Click [EDIT] - [PREFERENCES] - [WEB CONTENT] - [ACTIVE CONTENT]
The option here is "ENABLE SCRIPTING"

MS-Windows Version
Click [TOOLS] - [INTERNET OPTIONS] - [SECURITY] - [CUSTOM LEVEL]
The options here are:

       1. In the group labeled "Microsoft VM", JAVA PERMISSIONS
       2. All items in the group labeled "Scripting"
