How do I set up my computer to
use the Proxy Service?
How can I speed up my web surfing without going to DSL yet?

Internet Explorer Setup Utility ]
| Technical Note: To use the Proxy system,
you will need a newer browser that supports the http 1.1
protocol, and has proxy server use for http requests. Speeds
are for rough comparison only. Different website designs and
computer configurations will yield different results.

The new Proxy service allows BuffNET Dialup customers the chance
to speedup their internet data transfers between 2 and 6 times,
without special software of any kind. Just a simple tweak
to your web browser's settings is all that will be needed.
Because of the various different programs available, as well as
possible speed-up settings, we'll give you a table of your speed-up
options first, then show you where to make the changes in your program.
The following table is listed from low (aprox 2x) to high (aprox
6x) speedup.
| Proxy Port # |
Text will be sped up, plus.... |
| 1236 |
Standard image quality / slight speedup.
Only images that are not already compressed, will be compressed.
|
| 1235 |
Slightly slower than 1234 but with better image quality.
Roughly 50 percent graphics compression.
|
| 1234 |
High detail images will show "artifacting", or blurring. |
| 1237 |
Very poor image quality but very fast!
This setting is for those who don't care about graphics as much
as they do getting to the text of each site in a rapid manner.
|
The following table gives a list of the browsers we are aware
of that work, with a link to the setup instructions. If your browser
does not appear on this list, it simply means we have no information
about it at this time.
