Whenever I use Netscape, I seem to have the following problems:
Type 11 errors
Mac freezes after a home page comes up
"No DNS entry" messages.
Solution:
The problem is probably related to Netscape cache
overflowing.
Netscape cache, which stores http://www.buffnet.net/images of the web pages you have visited, is stored in your system folder by default. There are several possible solutions.
-
If these things start to happen but your computer has not yet
frozen, go to the menu <Options> - <Network
Preferences> - <Cache>. Click
"clear cache now", wait until it finishes,
click "apply" down below, then click "OK".
This empties your cache which is a folder in your Netscape
folder. Do this often enough so that you don't crash. You may
also want to select the option to clear cache every session.
This alone may solve your problem.
-
Go to your system folder and throw out Netscape preferences,
saving only bookmarks and addresses.
-
Give Netscape plenty of memory. With Netscape closed, click
once on its icon, go to the File menu, and
select "Get Info". Change the preferred size
to the largest amount you can afford.
-
If you are getting "No DNS entries," use another internet program
to check out your connection. You want to be sure that you still
have a connection and that the problem is only with Netscape.
"No DNS entry" messages may be a strong clue that you should
clear the cache quickly before you crash (although sometimes
it really means that the site you asked for doesn't exist.)
-
Run Norton Disk Doctor and rebuild your desktop. With all the
freezes you have most likely hammered the directory on the hard
drive, and it may be feeling a little confused (very bad for
the B tree directory to get confused). If you do not have Norton,
run what you have: Disk First Aid or MacTools.
